Industrial hygiene is the work of anticipating, recognizing, assessing and controlling the health hazards people face on the job, from chemical exposures to air quality and radiation. Safety First Group’s industrial hygienists are certified by the Board for Global EHS Credentialing, and they help you find and control those hazards before they turn into illness, claims or citations.
What does an industrial hygienist do?
Our IH services include:
- workplace risk exposure assessments, both qualitative and quantitative
- IH field services and sampling
- development of IH policies and procedures
- IH consulting
- OSHA compliance monitoring
Each one feeds the others. An assessment tells you where the risk is, field work measures it, and policies and procedures control it.
Qualitative exposure assessments
A qualitative exposure assessment is where most IH programs should start. Our hygienists look at the tasks, materials and conditions on your site and risk-rank the hazards, so effort goes where it matters most.
That ranking then drives the rest of your program. It is used to build monitoring strategies and sampling plans, it feeds your PPE assessments and job safety analyses (JSAs), and it helps coordinate medical surveillance for the workers who need it.
Quantitative exposure assessments
Where a hazard needs numbers, a quantitative exposure assessment uses sampling data and statistical analysis to quantify the risk. That tells you whether exposures are acceptable, whether controls are working, and where to act first. It also gives you defensible records if a regulator or a worker asks.
IH field services and OSHA compliance monitoring
Our field services cover the monitoring your site needs, including indoor air quality testing and ionizing radiation surveys for naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM and TENORM), among others. Compliance monitoring checks exposures against OSHA requirements so you know where you stand before an inspection does it for you.
IH policies, procedures and consulting
Monitoring results only help if they shape how work gets done. We develop the IH policies and procedures that turn findings into practice, including protocols and PPE requirements for heat illness, respiratory protection and hearing conservation. See policy and procedure development for how we build written programs.
Industrial hygiene staffing, from occasional support to 24/7/365
Every site needs a different level of IH support. We staff it the way you need it, from sporadic support for a single assessment or project to nested contractors on site 24/7/365. That flexibility suits plants with steady routine monitoring and those that need extra coverage during turnarounds.
Industrial hygiene on the Gulf Coast
Based in Kountze, Texas, SFG supports refineries, petrochemical and chemical plants, midstream facilities and other industrial sites across the Gulf Coast. IH works best alongside your broader safety program, so we often pair it with on-site EHS professionals and safety training.
